Proficiency Info

Nipper Pool Proficiency Swim

There is a safety requirement from SLSA that all U8 to U14 Nippers be assessed as proficient in the water before participating in any water activities.  This can be done via the Club sessions or a qualified swim coach.

The proficiency swim is compulsory for all U8 to Under 14 Nippers.

If your child has not completed the proficiency swim, they will not be able to participate in Sunday activities until the proficiency has been completed.

Please note that the swim proficiency is a mandatory assessment to ensure that each child from U9 and above has at least a Beginner Level swimming capacity. It provides the Surf Club, especially the Age Coordinators/Managers and Water Safety Team, with essential information about your child’s ability in the water. It is crucial that all children meet this requirement to help build their confidence in a surf environment.

Nippers wishing to compete at carnivals are also required to complete a subsequent Junior Competition Skill Evaluation (Surf Swim). The times included in the matrix provide an indication of the times surf coaches are looking for.

Proficiency Requirements:

Exciting changes are here for the Nipper pool proficiency this season! Proficiency requirements have been updated for each age group since last season, and you can now easily check the new details by clicking the image below.

We’ve also streamlined the process – no more hard copy forms! Simply click HERE, fill in your child/ children’s details BEFORE attending the Club help pool swim OR alternatively a qualified swim coach can complete the form at a regular swim training session. It’s that simple!

Note: children currently participating in the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) course are not required to complete this pool proficiency.

Alternative arrangements

If you’re unable to attend or miss the scheduled dates, an accredited swim coach can complete the assessment for you. If you’re not connected with swimming lessons or to a swim squad, contact your local pool to see if they can assist (fees usually apply and bookings are necessary).

The process remains the same – click the link HERE, fill out your child/ children’s details, and have the swim teacher/ coach complete the swim assessment online HERE. Please refer back to our website or to the club email for the link.

Please ensure this is completed by Saturday 12th October 2024.

If your child has not completed the proficiency swim, they will not be able to participate in Sunday activities until a certified form from a swim school is provided.
